Today I started experimenting with oil paints again after a little haitus of not using them for quite some time. I was sorting out one of my art boxes since all my supplies are everywhere, all higgledy piggledy mixed together and completely disorganised. Whilst I was sorting, I found that I had so many oil paints, some unused for YEARS! So, today I had a bit of a practice and play around with some oils and I forgot how difficult it is, and how patient you have to be waiting for it to dry; I am definitely not a patient person at all! I hung the paintings up to dry, but they probably won't be ready for a couple of days. You can see some of the examples of my oil paintings here. I actually did a wave painting that uses oil about 3/4 years ago which you can see in the mixed media section. It's actually one of my favourite paintings that I have done and there are times when I can't believe that I even painted it. I definitely need to work on believing in my skills more because I do produce good art work, it's just not realist or digital or fine art which is promoted by several artists/Instagram/YouTube as the thing to achieve. I need to remember there are different styles of art, including my own which are just as valid as those popular forms. After looking at the four paintings I did today, my favourite way to use the oils is definitely with a palette knife, as I think that I am able to produce better art this way in my style. The pieces that used a brush needed more layering but I might add more to those pictures in the future. So I will be experimenting more with both a brush and a palette knife, but the cleanup of the brushes is a nightmare in comparison! I tend to have 2D art sometimes rather than 3D which is something I would like to work on a bit more in the future. I do think that the birds didn't turn out as well as they could have, whereas I think the moon and mountains paintings turned out pretty well minus the smudge from my clumsy hand!
